Minister Atishi now remembers rather late Kejriwal’s assurance to implement the law in Delhi after the 2020 Surat coaching institute tragedy---Devender Yadav

Delhi Government’s announcement to introduce the Coaching Institute Regulation Act is an attempt to mislead the students— Devender Yadav

Delhi Congress, under the leadership DPCC president Shri Devender Yada, takes out  candle-light marches in all the 280 Blocks to give justice to Civil Services students

NEW DELHI, July 31, 2024—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, under the leadership of DPCC president Shri Devender Yadav, held candle-light marches in all the 280 Blocks of Delhi, demanding an impartial probe into the deaths of three Civil Services aspirants at Old Rajinder Nagar following waterlogging of the basement of a coaching centre, and the electrocution of another Civil Services aspirant at Patel Nagar, due to the negligence of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Government and the power distribution companies (DISCOMs). Shri Devender Yadav, who took part in the candle-light marches at the Badli Assembly, thanked the Delhi High Court for taking cognizance of the Old Rajinder Nagar coaching institute tragedy, and demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe to bring out the truth, and punish the guilty. He said that the guilty should be spared, whether they were politicians or bureaucrats. He said that Kejriwal’s promise of introducing Coaching Institute Regulation Act after the Surat tragedy in 2020 had turned out to be a hollow promise, as he took no step to fulfil his assurance. He said Minister Atishi has now dusted out that old promise to implement it in Delhi, which was only to mislead the students, and not with any intent to implement it.

Shri Devender Yadav said that parents, who send their children for Civil Services coaching to Delhi, should feel assured that their children were studying in a safe and secure environment in the Capital, and that would be possible only if those responsible for the Rajinder Nagar tragedy were brought to book.

Shri Devender Yadav said that the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP were indulging in mere lip service and gimmick in the name of holding probes to unravel the truth for the Rajinder Nagar tragedy, as their only intention was to divert the probe and protect  the big sharks responsible for the tragedy. He said that the Delhi Police has scripted a strange narrative by arresting a vehicle owner for driving through the water-logged streets, holding him responsible for the rain water entering the basement of the coaching centre, which was a weird logic. He said that the area Councillor, MLA and MP, representing the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP, should be held responsible for the illegal constructions, water-logging of streets and encroached pavements/clogged drains, and until the real culprits were brought before law, there was no hope of justice being delivered to the affected, and the protesting for the past four days, seeking justice to their deceased colleagues.

Shri Devender Yadav said that  it was gross injustice that some some junior MCD officials have been sacked/suspended for the deadly mishaps to save the big sharks, as such incidents happen only with the collusion of the AAP and BJP leaders who were now trying to take cover in the guise of the Home Ministry probe and the judicial probe sought by Delhi Minister Atishi. He said that  Atishi cannot escape blame for the clogged drains, and illegal constructions as she was the de facto Chief Minister, holding charge of Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Fire Service and Urban Development, besides many other portfolios.  Shri Devender Yadav said the  diversionary tactics of the BJP and the AAP Governments will not bring justice to the students protesting after the Old Rajinder Nagar and Patel Nagar mishaps.

Shri Devender Yadav said that as Education Minister, Atishi was well aware of the existence of illegal coaching centres, but her collusion in allowing the illegal activities of the coaching centres and the total negligence of their duty by the MCD and the Delhi Government in ensuring desilting of drains and sewers well before the monsoon rains  and clearing of   pavements of encroachments caused the tragedy.

Shri Devender Yadav said that the Delhi Government seemed to have been sleeping after the massive fire at the Mukherjee Nagar Coaching centre in 2023, and the direction of the Delhi High Court to take effective steps to prevent recurrence of such tragedies. He said that after the mishap, sending  some random notices to coaching centres will not solve the problem, as such accidents can be prevented only when the Delhi Government and the MCD carry out their jobs diligently and regularly, instead of  indulging in blame games, which Minister Atishi has been doing ever since the deaths of the Civil Services aspirants, when Delhi got water-logged with rain waters and when Delhiites were thirsting for drinking water at the height of the searing summer this year.
